Smyrna-based Georgia United FC played their first ever semi-pro match this morning at Brook Run Park in Dunwoody, GA. They faced off against long-standing semi-pro club, Terminus FC. They would be rigorously tested by the experienced Terminus roster. They would control large stretches of play and capitalize on the inconsistent Georgia United defense.

Georgia United FC will play their first home opener against Bel Calcio FC at The B.E.S.T. Academy on January 18th at 3:00PM.

Terminus FC will face SC Gwinnett at Brook Run Park on January 25th at 10:00AM.

First Half Recap:

Terminus began the match with early possession, cycling the ball around their formation efficiently and communicating well. There were multiple early opportunities for #20 and #29 from Terminus. The Georgia United keeper made several diving saves to keep the score level. Georgia United would struggle to settle possession, relying on counterattacks. The score would reach 1 - 0 after a lobbed cross over the keeper would be slotted in by Terminus’ #29.

My First-Half Takeaways:

“Terminus is playing with great shape and is getting through the GUFC midfield with ease. They’ve had a multitude of opportunities but just can’t finish consistently. This match could easily be 5-0 at half.”

“GUFC is having trouble with rushing their play and not settling the ball well. They’ve had a few counterattacking opportunities, but can’t get consistent possession in the attacking third.”

Second Half Recap:

Terminus didn’t let the break slow them down and opened on the attack quickly. Terminus’ #15 converted a powerful ground-ball free kick from outside the box into the phoenix’s second goal.

At this point, the Georgia United attack stalled completely, unable to cross the midfield and making inaccurate passes that yielded turnovers. The Georgia United keeper attempted to dive onto a ball close to the edge of the box, but #15 from Terminus dribbled around him. A quick pass to #16 lead to the third goal for the home team.

3 - 0

Georgia United’s frustration began to settle with a rough tackle on a Terminus player inside the box. A penalty kick was given and Terminus #7 slotted it in comfortably.

4 - 0.

Georgia United created a sizeable counterattack that would lead to a penalty being given outside the box. The only Georgia United shot on goal the entire half would result in the club’s first goal scored by #34. It was a powerful strike that opened the Smyrna-based club’s account in the APSL.

My Final Takeaways:

“Georgia United has a lot of work to do in terms of fluidity. Their plays felt rushed and lacked communication. These are things that come with being a new club with players who haven’t played many matches together. The match wasn’t a complete blowout and I saw good signs from this roster. I’m excited to see how they look by the end of the season.”

“Terminus showed that the holiday break didn’t affect them too much and got back to their winning ways. Their “through-ball” style of play worked well and consistently got through the Georgia United midfield. My only concern is that of finishing in critical moments. There were so many narrow misses that could’ve materialized. Overall, this was a great performance from the Phoenixes.

Decatur, GA - It was a rough 1st half from Buckhead as they found themselves down 4-0 going into halftime. The damage started early as Peachtree got on the board within the first five minutes thanks to a mistouch on the back line. Not too long after, Peachtree struck again with a rocket from a tight angle inside the box. An own goal and a brilliant set piece strike added to the Peachtree lead before halftime.

Despite the score, Buckhead SC showed some fight, winning the second half 1-0 even after going a man down. A beautiful lob from outside the top of the box cut into Peachtrees lead but it wasn’t enough as Buckhead fell 4-1.

Buckhead head coach Jay Lansdaal spoke about the differences in halves post match, “We had an unfortunate start to the game with nerves, an early injury, and an unfortunate red card making it hard to play our game. The team showed great resiliency the second half, and even with a man down kept Peachtree in their own half, and got us a goal back.” said Lansdaal.

The next home game for Buckhead SC is October 5th against Bel Calcio FC.

(For the sake of this article, I wasn’t able to access a roster, so the numbers of the players are utilized.)

First Half

Los Colegas began the half brightly, with #22 dictating play in the midfield and creating chances through clever facilitating passes. A long bouncing throw-in from him rolled dangerously through a crowded Majestic Red box, but no one could get the final touch.

Moments later, #11 for Los Colegas showed sharp footwork before being brought down right outside the box. The resulting penalty kick, however, was sent over the bar, an early missed opportunity that would prove costly.

Both sides exchanged chances, though Los Colegas maintained a touch more possession. #22 went on a powerful solo run, beating two defenders and forcing a diving save from the Majestic Red keeper. Los Colegas #8 also tested his luck from long range, his shot whistling just over the heads of his teammates.

Majestic Red found their breakthrough through #8, who drilled a low, powerful strike into the bottom left corner. Minutes later, #5 nearly doubled the lead, forcing a save, then rattling the crossbar with an open shot.

Los Colegas weren’t done, as #11 once again broke free, only to be denied by another diving save. But Majestic Red’s press soon paid off: #8 slipped a pass to #5, who crossed to #10, and the finish was clinical: 2-0 Majestic Red.

Los Colegas pulled one back before the break with a well-worked buildup, ending in #10 finding space in the box and finishing calmly. Tensions boiled over soon after, with a small brawl breaking out before halftime.

Halftime score: Majestic Red 2 – 1 Los Colegas

Second Half

Los Colegas came out aggressive, #12 striking the crossbar early on. But Majestic Red quickly restored control as #8 unleashed another long-range ground strike, sneaking it into the bottom left corner for his second of the game: 3-1.

Los Colegas answered through sheer persistence. A clever pass from #22 released #11, who collided with the keeper on a 1v1 break. #11 was able to maneuver around the keeper and slot it home: 3-2.

But Majestic Red refused to let up. #8 was taken down just outside the box, sparking chaos on the ensuing penalty kick. Amid the scramble, the ball slipped past the Los Colegas keeper to make it 4-2.

In the final minutes, Majestic Red nearly extended their lead with a close effort from #10, while Los Colegas pushed forward with a long spell of possession. Still, despite further chances from #22 and #11, the Majestic Red keeper held firm.

Full-Time: Majestic Red 4 – 2 Los Colegas

This match belonged to Majestic Red’s #8 and #5, who dictated the game with relentless pressing, smart distribution, and crucial finishes. Los Colegas showed spirit, especially through #22’s playmaking and #11’s dangerous runs, but defensive lapses, especially on the left side and missed opportunities kept them chasing the game.

Majestic Red walk away with all three points in an exciting 4–2 victory.

The smokestack at Agnes Scott College stood watch over Gellerstedt Field like a red-brick sentinel, its presence cutting sharply against the cloudless sky. By 1 p.m., the sun had risen high enough that no trees could offer shade. The air was still, humid, and heavy with quiet anticipation. Summer hung thick in every breath.

For Buckhead SC, this tryout marked something bigger than roster decisions. It was a signal of where the club is headed.

After establishing itself as a standout in the ADASL, the club is stepping onto the semi-pro stage. This season marks their debut in the American Premier Soccer League, a league defined by faster play, deeper rosters, and stronger competition. And it all starts here, on a new home field that reflects the club’s rising ambition.

“Yeah moving to Agnes Scott this year is a big improvement for us,” said Justin Nguyen, the club’s director. “It was the first grass field in the perimeter for our league. We’re making a jump to APSL this year in the semi pro rank so we figured that facilities need to match that. We have Bermuda grass on the NCAA field and we’re really just trying to elevate our game on and off the field. It starts with the pitch here.”

A New Home With Purpose

For years, Buckhead SC has been known as one of the most dynamic and forward-thinking programs in Atlanta’s amateur scene. Now, with the launch of a semi-pro team, they’re raising the ceiling without losing sight of their roots.

“Playing on grass helps reduce injuries as well as going back to that kind of youth roots,” said Felipe Correa, one of the managers of Buckhead SC’s APSL side. “Playing on grass is always nice for folks. Obviously it helps out with the heat here as well, and just specifically this field having the quality of fuel, it’s not just being grass. It’s been huge for us and having that whole identity and really feeling like you have a home ground versus kind of shared spaces that other teams are using within the league.”

Research backs the benefits. Data from 2012 to 2016 concluded that NFL games on turf showed a 16% higher rate of lower-body injuries per play, climbing to 20% higher when measuring just non-contact injuries. The study estimated that 319 fewer such injuries would have occurred if those games were played on grass.

Setting the Tone

Tryout drills leaned more toward assessment than exhaustion. Players cycled through footwork routines, mobility sequences, and short-pitch build-up exercises designed less to test stamina and more to reveal touch, timing, and game sense. The energy was focused and precise.

That tone was defined by respect, effort, and humility.

At one point, Safir, a young right winger, was tackled hard by a defender. Instead of conflict, the defender helped him up, offered a quick pointer, and gave him a pat on the back before jogging away.

“It’s really competitive,” Safir said. “A lot of people want to get onto the same team and so you’re playing against a lot of people, but it’s really wholesome because they still help you. Even though they’re competitors, they’re still giving me tips.”

Safir, like many players at tryouts, found his way to Buckhead through word of mouth and a desire to keep playing.

“I really wanted to join a team and continue playing the game I love since it’s something I grew up with,” he said. “And I saw that they had a try out and I was like why not try out and just came on Saturday and today.”

Building a Bridge: ADASL to APSL

Buckhead SC isn’t abandoning its foundation. The club will continue to field a team in the ADASL, offering players a clear pipeline from amateur to semi-pro without having to switch clubs or jump through hoops. The two rosters are united by staff, style, and standards.

“Raw talent alone doesn’t make you the best player on the field,” said Nguyen. “Camaraderie alone doesn’t get you goals. So it’s a mixture of everything. You have to make sure you get along with our current team, be sure you’re lifting each other up. There’s a saying: rising tides lift all boats. It’s the same thing here. Again, we’re trying to build something that’s bigger than just the team itself.”

In a soccer landscape that often feels fragmented, Buckhead SC is building something more connected. A local ladder that starts with Sunday league grit and leads to Saturday night lights.

Beyond the Pitch

Growth for Buckhead SC doesn’t stop with match day. The club is investing in Atlanta’s soccer ecosystem through nonprofit partnerships, volunteer efforts, and community-based events.

“We’re trying to build skill and talent here on the team within the soccer community,” said Correa. “But also trying to give back to the Atlanta community as well. So we’re looking into giving back with events within the city of Atlanta as well as teams to build that culture within the team and friendships. Just make this a holistic good place to be and you know some people are having fun as well.”

Just the Beginning

What unfolded at Gellerstedt Field wasn’t just a roster shakeout. It was the start of a movement. One that aims to elevate Georgia’s soccer scene through development, opportunity, and shared purpose.

As Buckhead SC enters the APSL, it carries with it more than just a new jersey or upgraded venue. It carries momentum. From grassroots to gameday, the foundation has been laid.

Now the real season begins.
