Welcome everybody to the Southeast Soccer Report!
You may know me from my work under the USL Rhino name, and I am very excited to join this team covering the Charleston Battery for the upcoming season and the seasons to come! So, with that being said, I wanted to begin with a little deep dive into the Charleston Battery and what the expectations should be this season.
Is the Open Cup in play? Is the Championship title in play? Let’s dive in and find out.

Open Cup
As for the Open Cup, I have a feeling that the stronger clubs in the league, including the Battery, will in fact take a lot of time preparing for this competition and will not back down against stronger opponents.
The Battery do start the competition in the third round, as is the same for the rest of the Championship clubs, which will give them some time to get situated in league play before having to turn their attention to a midweek cup game which will be beneficial for all Championship clubs.
I do have an overwhelming feeling that the Battery can make it far in the competition though, even with more MLS representation they have easily been one of the most consistent teams over the last two seasons. I feel they’re attacking approach of not letting off the gas will cause chaos for MLS teams and other Championship teams who can’t match the intensity, so I am very high on the idea that Charleston will do damage in this competition.
USL Championship
I mean, this is where all the marbles go isn’t it? They got ever so close to the final again before losing in heartbreaking fashion to Rhode Island and they will absolutely be in the mix for a run to the final again. They may just be the team in the best position to do it.
Louisville in their own right had to replace a key starter when Elijah Wynder departed for the LA Galaxy. Such is the case with Charleston having to bring in Johnny Klein as a replacement for Nick Markanich who left for CD Castellon. Charleston are in the position of their lives to finally return to the promise land and secure another title in the Championship, and I am very optimistic that their new and improved roster is not only stronger than Louisville’s, but capable of winning the whole damn thing as well.
That’s all for today folks! Just a short little introduction to dip our toes in and get the show on the road! The season is fast approaching, so as we get closer, you can expect more out from myself covering EVERYTHING regarding the best team in the south at this time!
