Atlanta United at Philadelphia Union Match Preview
Just the third road game of the season for the Five Stripes
The Five Stripes travel this Saturday to Chester, PA to face the Philadelphia Union in MLS matchday 9. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM.
Philadelphia (4-1-3; 13 points) got off to a blistering start to the season vaulting into first place in the East but have since cooled off as the goals have dried up and the Union now find themselves sitting in 5th place. Their last match was a 1-0 defeat at New York City. Forward Tai Baribo still sits tied atop the golden boot standings despite having not found the nets since matchday 3 and Philly is capable of a multi-goal performance if the Atlanta defense isn’t ready for the moment. The Union are 2-1-1 at home in 2025.
Atlanta (2-3-3; 9 points) have been on a rollercoaster of an early season ride and are back on the road after the recent three-game homestand that yielded just 4 points. Atlanta has sat just at or below the playoff line all season long and currently sit in 11th place in the East. The Five Stripes have only played two away matches this season that include a 2-0 loss at Charlotte and a 2-2 draw at Cincinnati. Latte Lath and Almiron have carried the goal-scoring burden and have netted 7 of the 9 goals scored by the Five Stripes. Injury has played a key roll in the early-season form and Atlanta looks to be almost at full strength with only defender Derrick Williams out with a hamstring injury this weekend.
Miguel Almiron played three times versus the Union during his first MLS stay and is undefeated versus Philly with a 2-1-0 record. Miggy dished out three assists in the two Atlanta wins during his career against the Union.
Atlanta can take a major step forward with a result this weekend and catch a slumping Philly team at just the right moment. The mindset of the Atlanta camp is positive and the team and staff are looking for the light at the end of the injury/inconsistency tunnel on the road this weekend.
Catch the game on the Apple TV MLS Season Pass at 7:30 PM Saturday night.
