Bocanegra joins Red Wolves' Board
Former US international in at CHI Memorial Stadium
USL League One’s Chattanooga Red Wolves have announced that 110-cap former US international Carlos Bocanegra will join the franchise’s Board of Directors.
In a highly successful 14 year professional career as a player, Bocanegra represented clubs in England, Scotland, and France, as well as the US. He won the US Open Cup twice with Chicago Fire and the CONCACAF Gold Cup twice in 2002 and 2007.
From 2015, the former Fulham defender was part of the executive team at Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United, that helped get the Five Stripes off to a strong start, winning three trophies in its first three years of existence. But the following years proved more difficult, with the Upland, CA native leading a player-recruitment process that included some high-priced flops such as Ezequiel Barco and Santiago Sosa. He parted ways with Atlanta in September of last year.
It is unclear exactly what his role will entail at the Red Wolves, be it as a form of brand ambassador, a technical advisor, or simply a board vote.
The Red Wolves’ owner, Bob Martino, hailed Bocanegra as someone who will “bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our Board of Directors. We are all looking forward to his contributions and perspective.”
“I’m really excited to be joining a club and group of individuals who understand that the club is the heartbeat of the community. The ownership group’s values and character drive the decisions that continue growing the game of soccer locally and across the country. I look forward to working with Bob and the board and collaborating with everyone involved in the club,” said Bocanegra.
