Carolina FC Swarm down Soda City Women in WPSL opener
Visiting Swarm win season opener 2-0 in Columbia versus Soda City Women
The visiting Carolina FC Swarm earned a 2-0 victory Saturday night in Columbia defeating the Soda City Women in both teams Atlantic Conference-Carolinas Division WPSL season debut.
The match saw both teams looking to gain chemistry and patterns around the field in these early minutes of the season.
Just when it looked like the match would head to the break scoreless a quick pass forward put Swarm forward Paige Frasz in on goal in the 41st minute. Frasz went on a slalom run inside the box with the ball at her feet to then roll the ball into the far post past the Soda keeper for the 1-0 advantage.
1-0 Swarm at the break, the second half saw clearer patterns and ideas begin to show in both team’s attack and circulation.
Despite creating some positive moments, Soda City just couldn’t find the space and time on the ball in the attacking third to really trouble the Swarm keeper Kelly Prescott who earned the shutout on the evening.
The Swarm created one final moment of sustained pressure on the Soda City goal in the 88th minute and were rewarded with a goal. A run up the left flank created a cross that the Soda City keeper could only redirect that fell to the feet of the Swarm’s Emily Fux who cleaned up scramble with the second goal of the night. 2-0 Swarm at the final whistle just a few ticks of the clock later.
The most dynamic player for Soda City FC was midfielder Lauren Kelly who will certainly be a focal point of their attack this season with her distribution and linking-play in the Soda midfield.
In the earlier UPSL Women’s match, the Swarm also claimed a 3-2 victory over the Soda City Women to win both matches on the day.
The Carolina Swarm jump right back on the field hosting NCFC in their home opener on Tuesday, May 20.
The Soda City Women travel to the Women’s Football Club of Charlotte on Wednesday, May 28 for their next match.
