Columbus United Announces Historic Stadium as New Home for 2025
The club plays their 2nd season in an 100-year old ground!
Built in 1925, A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium has been the home of games between Albany State and Fort Valley State University football and Tuskegee University and Morehouse College football, along with a U-16 international friendly in soccer between the United States and Mexico in the mid 1980’s. About 40 years later, soccer returns to the historic grounds as USL2 side Columbus United has a new home for 2025.
The new ground, with a massive entrance similar to that of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, can hold 15,000 fans at max capacity. If Columbus United ever decide to add investors and pursue a professional club (like neighbors Dothan United and Montgomery United are attempting to do), this would be a great home ground. AJ McClung is an upgrade from Kinnett Stadium, the 6,100 capacity stadium at Shaw High School that the club played at in their first season.
Along with the move to a new ground, the press release from Columbus United had a quote from general manager Eleni Hitchcock that read, “We are super excited to introduce the new fan experiences we will provide over the next few weeks leading up to kickoff.” The release goes on to say that fans must stay tuned for what those experiences will be. For a club that had average attendance numbers in the thousands last season, new fan experiences and a higher capacity ground gives Columbus a lot of potential to continue fan engagement and grow their support.
Columbus United begin their season in just over two weeks time, kicking off on May 17 at their new home against Tennessee SC. They will play 7 home games from May 17 to July 5, with 4 games in a row between June 4 and June 14. If you’re in the area, be sure to catch a game of one of the Southeast’s best semi-professional clubs on and off the field.
It's looks like a very cool stadium. I'm also hoping that the Summer schedule will mean that they can play on soccer lines, without American football lines on the field.
