United States men's national team and Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Gio Reyna has joined the ownership group of Ft. Lauderdale United. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle.
Ft. Lauderdale United currently has a women's team in the USL Super League, with the organization set to add a men's team that will compete next season in USL League One. The latest round of investment in the club also includes other individuals besides Reyna.
Reyna, 22, is one of the most visible young players in American soccer and his involvement with Fort Lauderdale United FC underscores the growing appeal and financial viability of the USL’s pro leagues as well as the celebrity-driven approach USL clubs are pushing for minority investment. His investment comes as the organization aims to build a successful pathway for both men and women to compete at a high level in South Florida.
