Greenville Hopes to Jumpstart Defense with Addition of Toby Sims
The 26 year old spent the last three seasons with EFL League Two side Harrogate Town
Greenville Triumph announced the signing of 26 year old English defender Toby Sims this morning. Sims spent the last three seasons with EFL League Two side Harrogate Town, making 46 total appearances, with two goals and four assists.
A right-footed right back, Sims could be available for this weekend’s match at Texoma FC. It’s a welcome addition, given the recent defensive struggles with Greenville this season. After eight matches, the club sits at 7th in the table with a -2 goal differential, and is in the midst of a four match winless streak. The squad has given up 12 goals over this time, currently 5th worst in the league.
Sims is already familiar with Greenville, having spent two summers with former NPSL side Greenville FC while attending Chowan University in North Carolina. He spent his final amateur season with SC United in nearby Columbia, and was named USL League Two Defender of the Year. This was followed by a season with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds before returning to England to sign with Harrogate Town.
Sims should fit in as a depth or starting option around Evan Lee and Conor Evans. While Lee had a breakout year offensively in 2024, and Evans is doing the same in his rookie season with a goal, and a team-leading three assists and 24 chances created, the right side has also been a defensive concern. The addition should allow Head Coach Rick Wright more flexibility with Lee and Evans to move over or up.
Greenville travels to Texoma FC for a matchup on Sunday, May 25th at 4:30 PM ET. The match comes a week after Greenville blew a home lead, giving up a late equalizer to AV Alta FC. It is the first match ever between Greenville and Texoma, who defeated Union Omaha at home last week 2-1. Texoma remains last in the table, but has a draw and a win in its last two league matches.
