Hickory FC Defends Home Turf, Sweeps Appalachian FC with 1-0 Win Before Record-breaking 4,107 Fans
Hickory, N.C. -- If the first 45 minutes at Moretz Stadium on Saturday night felt familiar, it’s because they were.
Just a few weeks removed from a cagey 1-0 Hickory win, Appalachian FC and fourth-ranked Hickory FC found themselves locked in another defensive stalemate Saturday night, heading into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
Hickory, well-rested after a week off, looked calm and composed in the early stages but found few clean looks in the final third. Appalachian, still stinging from back-to-back losses—including that narrow defeat to Hickory—came out with clear intent to disrupt. The pressure was physical, the midfield was crowded, and time on the ball came at a premium for both sides.
The moment of the half, though, came just 12 minutes in. A misplayed ball slipped past the Hickory back line, and goalkeeper Jasper Rump rushed off his line to clear it. But he mistimed his jump, and the ball took an awkward bounce, sailing over his head.
Appalachian pounced on the loose ball and had a golden opportunity with the net wide open—but the shot sailed just high of the crossbar and out of play.
It was the kind of chance that doesn’t come often in a defensive-minded match like this, and one Appalachian may look back on.
Just two minutes after the break, Hickory defenseman Maxime Webster changed the match in an instant.
Anticipating a poorly placed Appalachian free kick near midfield, Webster jumped the play and took off the other way. With Appalachian caught out of shape and scrambling to recover, Webster found himself on a 2-on-1 break with striker Antonio Pineda. One simple through ball later, Pineda buried the shot—and gave Hickory FC a 1-0 lead.
Appalachian FC was not without opportunities of their own, as they struck the crossbar three times over the course of the match—including twice in the second half.
The most heart-wrenching came in the 72nd minute, when a curling effort from inside the box beat Hickory goalkeeper Jasper Rump, but not the frame of the goal.
That would stand as Appalachian’s final meaningful opportunity, as Hickory remained tough down the stretch and closed out the 1-0 victory.
But perhaps the most significant development from the night? Hickory FC’s growing control of the Southeast Conference table. With the win, they now sit five points clear of second-place Charlottetown Hops FC—firmly in the driver’s seat as the season enters its back half.
For a team that continues to grind out hard-fought wins and show poise in tight moments, Saturday was just another example of how Hickory FC is more than just a top-four team in the nation—they're a team built to finish.
And fans are here for it.
Saturday’s crowd of 4,107 set a new home attendance record at Moretz Stadium, and it felt like it. Every 50/50 ball, every sliding challenge, every missed chance drew a reaction.
Hickory, North Carolina has always had great local support, but the volume and energy are starting to match the moment. With the way this team is playing—and where they could be headed—you get the feeling that record won’t be standing for long.
