Match Review: Texoma FC Vs Westchester SC
Westchester's brilliant comeback upsets Texoma!
Tale of the Tape
Westchester SC had not won a game at home this season and coming into this game, had not won in general since June 18th when they bested Forward Madison 2-1. It was a must win situation. A win here would keep their playoff hopes alive, however with the playoff picture being extremely tight, how the league is trending, and the fact Westchester is at the bottom of the table, it is improbable they would advance to the post-season.
Texoma on the other hand, can afford a loss, however they should be searching for wins from here on out. Texoma is also on a small losing streak, having not brought a win since August 23. Current consensus based on a per-game basis would give Texoma 38-40 points, which would be enough for post-season play given the right teams win/lose. Coach Forbes mentioned to a commentator on broadcast that every game coming up, we are treating like a cup final.
First Half
The first half was rather uneventful. A couple of yellow cards were given to Texoma early, but they struck gold when winger Luke McCormick found himself in the middle of the penalty box. Looking to shoot, McCormick suddenly was taken down by Westchester midfielder Joel Johnson, drawing the penalty for Texoma. They decided that midfielder Baker would take the penalty. To Texoma's misfortune, Bakers shot was too powerful and would hit the cross-bar, keeping the score level, 0-0.
Second Half
The second-half, similar to Texoma vs Spokane, was poised to be exciting, and the stakes only doubled as both teams desperately struggle to find a win. Texoma would not struggle for long as they would receive a free kick just a few feet outside the box. The cross that followed found defender Reid Valentine who would tap the ball past Westchester’s keeper, and give Texoma the lead in the 51st minute.
After the goal, it felt as if Texoma parked the bus, and never really got going again. Westchester fought for a comeback and a desperate win, while Texoma got cocky. Westchester would play very aggressive leading to a few yellow cards for them. Westchester however, to Texoma’s detriment, would mostly dominate the possession in the second half, working Texoma’s defense and putting forth decent chances. It seemed the equalizer could come at any time.
In the 67th minute, Westchester wins a corner kick. They decide to rush the keeper with a close cross right in front of the goal. What should have been an easy clearance turned sour very quickly. The try would deflect off a Texoma player, sending the ball directly to Westchester defender Tetteh, who effortlessly tapped in the equalizer. This would reenergize the fans and the Westchester players, who now felt that they could win and upset Texoma.
Texoma would only put up a couple of chances after Westchester equalized; it did not feel like they played as if playoffs were on the line. In the 81st minute, a lazy clearance by star keeper Javier Garcia would give the ball directly back to Westchester. They played with real speed and determination, easily ran through Texoma’s midfield, and after a brilliant through ball to striker Obregon Jr, Westchester would lead 2-1.
Final Thoughts
The story of the game was who wanted it more. Both teams playoff hopes are still alive, however, Texoma would have been in a much better position with a result. Westchester played better, especially in the second-half. Texoma has a problem with their defense and creating chances, while Westchester mostly were riddled in foul trouble, and the inability to convert on the chances they make. I do not think Texoma chose the right penalty kick taker, and that hurt them. Texoma also subbed in new signing and former academy player Aldair Flowers, where I personally think Diego Pepi would have been the better sub, especially in that situation where a goal is needed. Overall, this loss is on Texoma, and they will be looking to redeem themselves against Portland Heart of Pine on Sep. 27, in Portland, ME. Westchester looks to continue their improbable journey to playoffs. They played well, and they will be looking to hopefully repeat their June 18th win over Forward Madison on Sep. 28, at home.
