Palmetto State Report: April 24
Battery on a roll; Triumph USL Cup; Soda City undefeated; Boiling Springs climbing; Women’s WPSL signings
As teams have settled into the regular season around the Palmetto State, there have been some clear patterns emerge from the various leagues. There have been some surprises, some huge results, and some really tasty matches just ahead this spring. Let’s go!
How good has the Charleston Battery been? They just got better adding Rubin.
A huge road win at the Indy XI, a very convincing Lamar Hunt US Open Cup win over Tormenta, and another big-time attacker named Rubin on the way to Patriots Point. The Charleston Battery are on a roll and look to be gearing up for a historic season in 2025. Forward MD Myers was named USL Championship player of the week after his brace at Indy after this follows his man-of-the-match award and hat trick versus Tormenta in the Open Cup. Guatemalan forward Rubio Ruben, who has played for Queretaro in Liga MX and Real Salt Lake in MLS, just signed with the Battery giving them another weapon up top alongside Myers and Cal Jennings.
Greenville on the road in USL Cup.
The Triumph were bounced out of the US Open Cup but have the USL Jägermeister Cup just on the horizon. The Triumph dropped their last two USL League One matches 0-1 to Knoxville and Chattanooga and will look to begin the group stage of the USL Cup on a positive note as they travel to bitter rivals Tormenta. Fireworks always happen when these two get together and the all-time series across all competitions finds the teams playing 22 matches with the Triumph holding a 10 to 9 edge over Tormenta with 3 draws. Greenville has scored 34 goals to Tormenta’s 33 goals in the series. Greenville has enjoyed the recent results and have won five of the last six meetings with one draw. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM Saturday night in Statesboro.
Soda just keeps on winning.
Three wins from three games played in 2025 finds Soda City sitting tied atop the UPSL Mid-Atlantic South standings with Charlotte and Asheville. Soda has scored 8 goals and allowed a conference-low 3 goals against. The defending national champs hit the road to play undefeated Asheville on April 26 in a top-of-the-table clash in the mountains.
Boiling Springs takes a huge step forward.
A new home at Oakbrook Prep School and a massive 3-1 win over the South Carolina United Heat to open the home dates has the newly promoted UPSL side dreaming of huge things in the Upstate. Boiling has the weekend off before hosting Asheville on May 4.
Women’s teams filling out their rosters.
The WPSL and UPSL Women’s seasons are just around the corner and the local teams are busy adding players to their rosters as preseason kicks into high gear. The Soda City Women have signed their first six players for 2025 and Head Coach John Collins is looking to set the foundation this season for the move to WPSL Pro in 2026. WPSL Pro will be a second-division professional soccer league and will complete the US Pro Women’s Soccer pyramid. Boiling Springs United FC Women have signed 10 players ahead of their debut campaign and have one more tryout coming up on April 27 at 6 PM. The women’s season kicks off on May 17
