Palmetto State Report: June 5
Highlights of the past week from around the Palmetto State
There were some huge results around the state as the UPSL teams near the playoffs, the USL Two and USL W League schedule picks up speed, and the USL teams met in a Palmetto State Jägermeister Cup match.
Soda City remain undefeated in UPSL Mid-Atlantic South Conference
Their previous meeting was a tense 1-1 draw in the Upstate, but the rematch in Irmo was a 3-0 win as Soda City FC provided some distance at the top of the UPSL Conference table as they defeated Boiling Springs FC. Soda scored in the 3rd minute and then two goals late in the second half to go five points clear at the top while Boiling Springs now sits in fourth place just ahead of Charleston United and Charlotte SA. Soda is on the road this week at Charleston United.
Bantams split home results in USL W League homestand
It was a 4-0 win over the NC Fusion and a 0-2 loss to visiting Tormenta in the recent USL W League homestand for the South Carolina United Bantams women. Ana Manning scored a brace in the win over the Fusion. The Bantams are now sitting in third place on 9 points and will look to bounce back into the win column as they travel to Tormenta on Sunday, June 8.
Triumph downs Battery in USL Cup clash
The USL League One Triumph slipped past the USL Championship Battery 1-0 at Patriots Point in their recent USL Jägermeister Cup match. The match was the complete reversal of fortunes from each team’s USL regular season campaign since the Battery are undefeated in their last seven USLC matches while the Triumph haven’t won in their last six USL1 matches. Ben Zakowski scored in the 44th minute and the Triumph withstood the Battery pressure over the final 45 minutes to preserve the shutout and claim the win. The Battery visit Loudoun this weekend.
SCU Heat defeat Charleston on the road
It was a 1-0 win on the road for the SC United Heat in their last UPSL match. Matias Daniel took home man-of-the-match honors for the Heat on the day. With the win, the Heat sit comfortably in second place in the conference and host Boiling Springs in their final home date of the spring season this Saturday at 3 PM.
Soda City Women pick up first WPSL victory
After a couple of narrow defeats, the Soda City Women picked up their first WPSL win of the season with a 2-1 result on the road at North Carolina FC last Saturday. Lauren Kelly and Sarah Ward scored the Soda goals to lift the team to victory. Soda hosts Port City FC this Saturday at 7 PM.
Bantams win home opener over Tobacco Road FC
Two second-half goals were enough to push the Bantams into the win column last Saturday night in Columbia. After Tobacco Road FC took the lead into the half, the Bantams took all three points as Ethan Hackenberg and substitute Oscar Bech scored the second-half Bantams goals. The squad travels to Salem City this weekend.
Triumph and Liberty host matches at Clemson this weekend
Historic Riggs Field on the campus of Clemson University will host matches for both the Liberty and Triumph this weekend. On Friday, the Liberty host perennial power Asheville City at 7 PM before the Triumph hosts USL One expansion side FC Naples on Saturday night at 7 PM.
Electric City host Wake Futbol Club in top-of-the-table UPSL clash
Anderson will be the site for the UPSL Division 1 Mid-Atlantic “match of the season” as first-place Wake Futbol Club pays a visit to second-place Electric City this Saturday at 4 PM. Wake is undefeated on 21 points while Electric has just one loss and sits at 18 points as these two teams have separated from the rest of the table to make it a two-team race for the regular season crown. These two have combined to score 47 goals allowing just 7 goals in the 14 games they’ve combined to play in 2025. Going to be a great match between these two heavyweights this weekend…
Palmetto Athletic FC have their first official summer squad signee
Mitchel Waycott is the first summer squad signing for APSL expansion team Palmetto Athletic FC. The West Alabama signee is a product of Mauldin HS and will play for Palmetto in their upcoming summer season.
Plenty of soccer, all over the state. No excuses to not get out and see a match this weekend.
