Palmetto State Report: May 1
It’s about to get really busy in the month of May…
The month of May is going to bring the next wave of soccer action to the Palmetto State as the USL League Two, USL W League, WPSL, and UPSL Women get the ball rolling around South Carolina. Add to this some USL Cup matches as well as more USL and UPSL regular season matches, and you got a busy schedule of soccer waiting for you.
USL Cup results
Both the South Carolina clubs fell on the road in round one of the USL Cup group stage play. Greenville dropped a 2-1 result at Tormenta while the Battery dropped a 1-0 result at FC Naples. Round Two of group play will feature a Palmetto State derby as the Triumph travels to Charleston on Saturday, May 31. Both teams return to league play this weekend.
Tough weekend at the office for UPSL First Division teams
All three UPSL First Division teams lost on the last match day to North Carolina opposition. Electric City still sit in 4th place in the Mid-Atlantic table while both Emerald City and Boiling Springs 2 slip into the bottom third of the table after four games. All three clubs need to have a short memory and will look to get back into the win column as they all play again this weekend.
Soda City just keep on growing
Soda City FC will be adding a UPSL Academy program this fall offering U13, U15, and U17 teams. Soda City recently was named as a WPSL Pro franchise for the 2026 season and will be fielding a WPSL team as well as a UPSL Women’s team in 2025. The new Academy program “will lead to a pathway from club to college to pro” under the Soda City FC umbrella. Tryouts are scheduled for May 28 and 29 at Irmo High School.
Battery on the road in next round of US Open Cup
The Charleston Battery travel to DC United in the next round (Round of 32) of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on May 6. These two franchises have played some classic US Open Cup matches including the 1999 “Coffee Pot Match” and the 2008 Final. The winner of the DC United-Battery match will host the winner of Charlotte FC and NCFC in the Round of 16.
