Palmetto State Report: May 22
Big results for the Heat, Battery, Bantams Women, and Electric City
The Heat is “on” is South Carolina as the Battery is fully charged while the Bantams climb the ascent when the scoreboard lights come on in the Electric City.
South Carolina United Heat defeat Charleston United
The SCU Heat claimed a huge 4-1 win over the visiting Charleston United last Saturday in Columbia. After a tense 1-1 deadlock at the half, the Heat erupted for three second-half goals to push them into second place in the UPSL Mid-Atlantic South Conference. With just three more regular season games to play, the Heat look to be setting up a huge regular season finale at Soda City on June 14 and then some playoff success as everything is coming together over this final stretch. Heat Head Coach Ivan Vlek provided some insight about this push to the finish line this spring. “With three games to go, we still have chances to be the number one seed,” said Coach Ivan Vlek. “It only depends on us, if we win the three games, I think we will be very close to the number one seed, and from there you know it’s a place we’ve been before, we know it’s win or go home…and that’s what we like, that’s what we love, and that’s what we train for and what we did the preseason for… to be in the big games and go as far as we can.”
Another huge USL Championship result for the Battery
The matchup was advertised to be a clash of two heavyweight teams in the USL Championship last Saturday at Patriots Point. At the final whistle it was the Charleston Battery the only team still standing after a 4-0 demolition of the then-leading western division San Antonia FC. Battery Forward Cal Jennings recorded a brace in the game, climbed to the top of the USLC Golden Boot standings, and earned the USLC Week 11 Player of the Week honors for the performance. The Battery go on the road to an always tricky Detroit City this weekend before returning home to host The Greenville Triumph in USL Cup action on May 31.
USL W-League success for SC United Bantams in Charlotte
It was a successful trip to Charlotte as the SCU United Bantams Women defeated the Carolina Ascent 3-1 in the regular season opener. The Ascent had grabbed the lead right before the half but three goals evenly spread out throughout the second half saw the Bantams Women tie the match, take the lead, and then put the match away over the second 45 minutes. Isabella Demarco scored in the 56th minute before Ana Manning tallied in the 69th minute and Megan Bradley completed the score line in the 84th minute. The ladies travel to Wake FC on May 28 in their next match.
Electric City win 3-2 and move into second place in UPSL D1 Mid-Atlantic Table
Electric City claimed a 3-2 win Saturday over Jordan Lake FC to separate the two teams and to push Electric City into sole possession of second place in the UPSL D1 Mid-Atlantic table. Electric City has scored 19 goals this season only allowing 4 goal in the six matches played. Eduardo Melgar Majia leads the team with five goals including a hat trick in the victory over Forest Hills SC. The upcoming June 7 clash versus first-place Wake FC looks to be a match that could decide a lot at the top of the table this spring.
