Palmetto State Report: May 29
A very busy summer of soccer just ahead in South Carolina
It was a lighter schedule of matches last weekend over the Memorial Day holiday but it’s about to be soccer in every zip code all around the Palmetto State.
Boiling Springs Women drop UPSL opener
The Carolina Crew claimed a 2-1 win in the UPSL season opener at Boiling Springs spoiling the home debut of the newest Upstate expansion side. Addie Hawkins scored the goal for Boiling Springs putting her name in the record book with the first goal in franchise history. The team will travel to the Carolina FC Swarm on June 10 for their next match.
Battery win seventh straight USLC match; Jennings with brace in 3-1 win at Detroit
Another game and another victory for the Battery. The Battery claimed a 3-1 win as they snapped Detroit’s nine-game undefeated streak at home. Coach Ben Pirmann was named USLC Coach of the Week and both Cal Jennings and Juan David Torres were named to the team of the week. Jennings with the brace also puts him in the top spot of the Golden Boot race with 11 goals on the season. The Battery are back at home this weekend hosting the Greenville Triumph in the next match day of the USL Cup.
Triumph continue to slide in USL1 table falling 0-1 at Texoma
It was another lackluster performance from the Triumph slipping 0-1 on the road in Texas. The Triumph endured the extremely warm temperature for over 90 minutes and thought they might earn a hard-fought point on the road only to be undone in second-half stoppage time. Texoma converted a corner kick with a header in the 97th minute to grab the result deep into stoppage time. Greenville now sits in 8th place with 9 points from 9 games played. The matches don’t get easier this weekend as the Triumph will travel to the in-form Battery in a USL Cup match at Patriot’s Point.
River City FC to host Carolina Amateur Super Cup this summer
Columbia’s River City FC are preparing to host an 11v11 league this summer. More details on this new event will follow in the coming weeks.
South Carolina United Bantams host home openers this weekend.
The Monti will be busy Saturday night May 31 as both the USL Two and USL W League Bantams are hosting matches. Both games kickoff at 7:30 PM at the South Eastern Freight Lines Soccer Complex just off Monticello Road. The first 150 fans will get a free Bantams t-shirt and tickets for both matches are just $6.
