Revs Recap: Atencio Goal Lifts Revolution to Another Geranium Derby Victory
The Revs take a 2-1 victory on the road to keep their Geranium Derby record an even 2-0 in the last two seasons.
McDonough, Ga. – Sunday’s contest between the Georgia Revolution FC and cross-county rivals Albion SC Atlanta came to an end after a tightly contested match was decided with a second-half goal by forward Gustavo Atencio to raise the Revs into second place in the UPSL Georgia Premier Division. It was the Revs’ tenacious backline that saw out a 2-1 victory and helped raise the Revolution to their fourth win in a row and their second straight derby victory over a struggling Albion SC Atlanta side that now moves into the relegation zone with two matches left in the season.
The match started off with a strike from winger Lennox Dixon, who shot up through the middle of the pitch and received a beautifully placed pass from Micah Schneider that finished in the top corner of the goal to bring the lead to 1-0. After Albion SC equalized off a goalkeeping mistake in the first half, the Revs upped the tempo and pulled ahead following a second-half corner that was turned into the net by forward Gustavo Atencio to seal the win for the Revolution.
The Revolution now holds a 2-0 record over cross-county rivals Albion SC Atlanta in the Geranium Derby, named after the nickname for the city of McDonough, which is called “The Geranium City” and hosts their annual Geranium Festival since 1977. The Revolution has outscored Albion 7-2 through both games, and forward Lennox Dixon now has three goals against Albion SC Atlanta through two Geranium Derbies.
Thoughts From The Captain
“In reflection, I think we were far from our best selves on the day. Despite being in control of the match, I don’t think we really got out of second gear, especially in comparison to the levels we have set in the past few weeks. But we showed good character and discipline to get the result we needed and keep our momentum building into the playoffs.
I think the fact that we won the game and still have a bitter taste in our mouths really shows how strong the mentality of the squad is. We have so much quality in this team, and the high standards to match. The sky is the limit for this group.
We are looking forward to SSL next week, which will be another tough test on the road, but also another opportunity for us to continue to improve and prepare for the playoffs.” - Lewis Green, Defender & Team Captain
