South Georgia Tormenta at Home in the US Open Cup
Four games and four wins at home in the ‘Boro
The South Georgia Tormenta loves playing home matches inside Tormenta Stadium in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Opening in the fall of 2022, Tormenta Stadium has seen four US Open Cup games over the past three tournaments and is set to host another Open Cup match on April 1, 2025.
The home team has been rude hosts knocking all their opponents out of the Open Cup in the four matches played in Statesboro.
By the numbers:
A perfect 4 and 0 in matches played. All the games have been first or second round matchups. The team has outscored the visiting teams 10 to 1 in the matches and three of these have been clean sheets. Tormenta hasn’t allowed a goal in a home US Open Cup match over the last three matches in 270 minutes and counting (RGV scored the lone goal allowed in the 90th minute in 2023).
By the leagues:
Twice Tormenta has defeated UPSL teams with the other two Open Cup wins coming over NISA and USL Championship opponents.
By the opponents:
In 2023, the now-defunct USL Championship side Rio Grande Valley made the trip to Statesboro. Tormenta held a 2-0 lead until RGV grabbed a late goal in the 90+1 minute. Pablo Jara made a huge save on a second half PK in this match.
In 2024 it was a 1-0 win over UPSL Florida side FC America CFL Spurs in the first round and then a Coastal Empire derby win 4-0 over NISA’s Savannah Clovers in round two. Nick Akoto scored in the 5th minute versus the Spurs only to have Niall Watson score in the 2nd minute versus the Clovers to provide the fastest home US Open Cup goals for Tormenta.
Recently in 2025, it was a 3-0 win over another UPSL Florida side Harbor City FC to keep the shutout streak and the overall winning streak in place. Super-sub Niall Reid-Stephen provided the brace in a five-minute span during the second half to complete the victory.
By the matchup.
FORO SC are the next team set to visit Tormenta Stadium on April 1 for their US Open Cup second round match. This might prove to be a tricky side to navigate past. FORO SC from the UPSL are Cupset specialist and just defeated USL League One expansion side Texoma FC 2-1 in the first round. In 2024, FORO defeated MLS NEXT Pro side Austin FC II in the US Open Cup and Tormenta already has this fact in mind as they prepare for the upcoming match.
By the way:
Tormenta has scored 10 goals in the four matches played with it being an even split between the north and south goals at Tormenta Stadium. The game-winning goal, however, has been scored three times at the south goal with only the RGV match won with a goal at the north end of the stadium.
