Turnbridge's Brace Lifts Tormenta Over Greenville in Jägermeister Cup Opener
Mason Turnbridge netted a brace and Samuel Jones made his first professional start as South Georgia Tormenta edged past Greenville Triumph 2-1 in the opening match of the Jägermeister Cup. This weekend’s clash, featuring two teams separated by less than 200 miles, was a fiery affair with Group 6 points on the line.
Early on, both sides struggled to create momentum, squandering several half-chances. The breakthrough came in the 20th minute after Greenville’s Agyaakwah committed a hard challenge in the box, resulting in a penalty. Turnbridge stepped up and calmly slotted it home to give Tormenta the lead. The call sparked protest from Greenville manager Rick Wright, who received a yellow card for his dissent, but the decision stood.
Greenville’s best opportunity came in the 33rd minute when Lee had a clear chance to equalize but pushed his penalty shot wide left. Tormenta would double their advantage just before halftime, as Turnbridge latched onto a pinpoint cross from Niall Reid-Stephen at the top of the box and finished with confidence.
Up 2-0 at the half, Tormenta appeared to be cruising. However, the second half turned into a physical battle, with neither side generating clear-cut chances until the 86th minute. That’s when Greenville’s Robles made a darting run and slipped a shot past Jones to make it 2-1, adding late drama.
The final minutes, including seven minutes of stoppage time, were tense and physical, but Tormenta held firm to secure the win. The victory sets the tone for what could be a preview of their upcoming USL League One clash in August.
Next, Tormenta hits the road to face Spokane, hoping to build on their momentum against one of the hottest teams in the league.
